Set Your Child up for Success

When you are a child, the world can feel big and scary. When you don’t understand what all of the crazy machines and bright lights are at the eye doctor’s office, it can be intimidating.

We understand this and work hard to ensure every patient feels relaxed and safe in our office. Making sure your child is comfortable at the optometrist’s office helps set them up for a lifetime of good eye health and clear, comfortable vision.

Give Your Child a Brighter Future

Children rely on their vision for so much—from learning social cues to reading and writing, their vision is a valuable developmental tool. That’s why it’s important to ensure their eyes are well taken care of.

When children have visual issues, they may not even realize something is wrong. They may learn to compensate for these differences, making it hard for parents to tell if their child is struggling. Even if you can tell something is wrong, the root cause could be misdiagnosed as a learning disability or another issue without the help of an optometrist.

Their Vision, Their World

Your child’s first comprehensive eye exam should happen between the ages of 6 and 9 months. If all is well, their next visit should be between the ages of 2 and 3 years old. Finally, your child should have another comprehensive exam right before they start school, and then visit their optometrist annually throughout their school years.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is one of the most common eye conditions to affect children and teenagers. Most cases of myopia develop in childhood and are diagnosed between the early school years through the teens. Annual eye exams during childhood can help us identify this condition as early as possible.

What’s unfortunate is that myopia can progress into a more severe version, known as high myopia. If myopia worsens as your child ages, they may require stronger prescriptions in adulthood to see clearly.

Fortunately, recent scientific breakthroughs in myopia control can help slow the progression of this condition, safeguarding your child’s vision.

Vision therapy can help train the visual system to operate more efficiently and may be used when traditional methods of vision correction fall short.

Vision therapy aims to teach the eyes and brain to work together as a team. By using movements and exercises (which can be made into fun games for children), we teach the brain how to work effectively with the eyes and other components of the visual system.

Vision therapy can help address visual issues in both adults and children. To learn more about how vision therapy could help your family, please visit our vision therapy page.

Our Technology

At Cowichan Eyecare, we’ve built our foundation on providing quality patient care. Your appointment with our careful, thorough, and compassionate team will include an in-depth review of your medical history and optical needs.

We also use diagnostic technology paired with tried-and-true methods to thoroughly assess your vision and eye health, and address any issues we discover.

OCT, or optical coherence tomography, is used to photograph the thickness of the 10 layers in the retina.

An OCT scan helps us determine whether your child’s eyes are healthy and gives us the information we need to treat problems thoroughly and effectively. OCT is used to guide treatment for diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.

The optomap gives us an ultra-wide view of your child’s retina and does not require dilation drops.

The images taken are stored for future reference so that we can keep track of changes in your eye structure, no matter how small. This allows for early diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases that may not present with symptoms until their later stages.
