Protect Your Vision & Eye Health
Diabetic eyes require special care and attention, which is why we offer eye exams specifically tailored to the unique needs of patients with diabetes. Because of the numerous eye health risks associated with this disease, patients with diabetes or prediabetes should have their eyes examined at least once per year.
Some may think that because they are managing their blood sugar well, it is not necessary to undergo routine diabetic eye exams. This is not the case. While properly managing your blood sugar can reduce your risk of diabetic eye disease, this risk can never be entirely eliminated.
Diabetes & Your Eye Health
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. But that is only one of the eye issues patients with diabetes are at risk of developing.
Diabetes can increase the risk of developing other eye issues, such as:
Most eye diseases do not display symptoms in their early stages, which means that many patients don’t realize something is wrong until they have already experienced vision loss.

Our Technology
At Cowichan Eyecare, we’ve built our foundation on providing quality patient care. Your appointment with our careful, thorough, and compassionate team will include an in-depth review of your medical history and optical needs.
We also use diagnostic technology paired with tried-and-true methods to thoroughly assess your vision and eye health, and address any issues we discover.
OCT
OCT, or optical coherence tomography, is used to photograph the thickness of the 10 layers in the retina.
An OCT scan helps us determine whether your eyes are healthy and gives us the information we need to treat problems thoroughly and effectively. OCT is used to guide treatment for diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.
Optomap
The optomap gives us an ultra-wide view of your retina and does not require dilation drops.
The images taken are stored for future reference so that we can keep track of changes in your eye structure, no matter how small. This allows for early diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases that may not present with symptoms until their later stages.
Why Put Your Vision at Risk?
Unless otherwise recommended, individuals with diabetes should visit their optometrist at least once a year. This gives your optometrist a chance to examine your eyes thoroughly and monitor any changes in your vision or eye health that could indicate a developing problem.
