Eye Care from Home
Cowichan Eyecare offers tele-optometry to our patients so they can receive quality care from the comfort of their homes. This is a safe way to receive eye care and avoid walk-in clinics or hospital emergency rooms.
Telemedicine is the practice of caring for patients remotely when the doctor and the patient are not physically present with each other.
Tele-optometry does not replace your regular eye exam—it can be used for multiple patient issues, such as:
- Eye infections
- Eye problems
- Medication refills
- Other health-related eye concerns
The government of BC has recently recognized the need for tele-optometry and has partially funded these services through Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP). Other conditions such as loss of vision, double vision, and refractive errors still require in-person comprehensive ocular assessments.
There is a fee for tele-optometry appointments.
Online Consultation
Your online consultation is safe and protects your privacy using encryption technology for any personal information or images that may be shared between you and your doctor on the platform. Your online consultation may involve video chat, direct messaging, or photo uploads. You will be asked questions about the nature of your symptoms as well as your relevant health history, including any medications you are taking, so please have this information on hand before you initiate the consultation.
Following your online consult, you will be given specific instructions to treat or manage your condition, or an in-person visit will be arranged should this be deemed necessary.
What Is Care1?
Care1 is the largest telemedicine network in Canada for eye care and brings together optometrists, ophthalmologists, and family physicians to work together on patient eye care.
How Does Care1 Work?
With modern technology, we can capture detailed images of the eye and its structures. Care1 sends these images to doctors of ophthalmology, specialized eye surgeons, and eye doctors who review them digitally.
Care1 works in the following steps:
- An optometrist examines and takes photos of your eyes
- The results and photos are uploaded to Care 1 and reviewed by an ophthalmologist
- The optometrist and ophthalmologist collaborate on diagnosis and treatment
- You receive treatment from your optometrist or are referred if surgical treatment is required

Our optometry clinic has been certified as a Care1-integrated clinic—this means that:
- We have quality equipment
- We are dedicated to maintaining a high standard of eye care
- All of our staff and optometrists have completed Care1 training
- Our optometrists collaborate with ophthalmologists to manage eye diseases
