Early Warning Signs & Symptoms of Glaucoma

Changes in your vision can be so gradual that you might not notice them right away. You may find yourself needing a little more light to read or adjusting to a dark room more slowly. These small shifts can seem like a normal part of life, but our team at Cowichan Eyecare knows they can sometimes signal an underlying eye health condition, such as glaucoma.

Glaucoma often affects your vision quietly, without obvious initial symptoms. Because glaucoma can develop with no early warning signs, routine eye exams are a key part of protecting your sight. A comprehensive check-up allows an optometrist to spot subtle changes inside your eye that you would not be able to see or feel.

What Is Glaucoma & How Does It Affect Your Sight?

Think of the pressure inside your eye like the air pressure in a car tire—it needs to stay within a specific range to function safely. Balance is maintained by an internal clear fluid that constantly flows in and out of the eye.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions characterized by damage to the optic nerve, often caused by abnormally high pressure within the eye. When the eye’s drainage system becomes restricted or blocked, fluid builds up, raising pressure. Increased pressure puts stress on the delicate optic nerve, the “high-speed data cable” at the back of the eye that sends visual information to your brain.

Because damage often happens gradually and without pain, glaucoma is frequently called the “silent thief of sight.” Your optometrist provides specialized glaucoma care to monitor and manage this pressure, protecting your optic nerve and preserving your vision long before you notice a change.

How Glaucoma Is Detected Early

Because glaucoma often develops without symptoms, early detection relies on comprehensive diagnostic testing during routine eye exams. Several specialized tests work together to assess your risk and catch changes before they affect your vision.

Eye Pressure Measurement (Tonometry)

Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most significant risk factor for glaucoma. During your exam, your optometrist measures the pressure inside your eye using tonometry. Though some people develop glaucoma with normal pressure levels (normal-tension glaucoma), while others have elevated pressure without glaucoma (ocular hypertension).

Optic Nerve Imaging

Advanced imaging technology provides detailed views of your optic nerve structure and health:

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) creates high-resolution 3D cross-sectional images of your retinal nerve fiber layer, the delicate tissue that glaucoma damages. These images establish a baseline and track any thinning over time, even before you notice vision changes.

OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography) goes a step further by visualizing blood flow patterns around your optic nerve without requiring dye injections. This technology can detect microvascular changes that may indicate early glaucoma damage before structural changes become obvious on standard OCT imaging.

Visual Field Testing (Perimetry)

Perimetry testing maps your complete field of vision, including your peripheral (side) vision. You’ll focus on a central point while responding to small lights that appear in different areas of your visual field. This test identifies blind spots you may not notice in daily life and tracks whether they expand over time, a key indicator of glaucoma progression.

Look for These Quiet Changes in Your Vision

While many people experience no symptoms in the early stages, some gradual changes may become noticeable over time. An optometrist uses a perimetry test to check for these subtle shifts in your peripheral vision long before you might notice them.

Keep an eye out for these changes:

  • A slow loss of your side vision, sometimes described as looking through a tunnel
  • Difficulty seeing clearly in low light, like at dusk or in a dimly lit room
  • Needing more frequent updates to your glasses or contact lens prescription

If you experience significant vision loss that interferes with your daily life, a low-vision assessment can help you find tools and strategies to maximize your remaining vision.

More Obvious Symptoms You May Experience

Sudden Signs That Need Attention

In less common forms of glaucoma, symptoms can appear suddenly and feel much more intense. These signs differ from the slow, quiet progression most people experience and often require emergency eye care; they happen quickly, making it clear that something is wrong with your vision. Knowing how to respond to eye emergencies can help you act fast.

  • Vision that suddenly becomes hazy or blurred
  • Intense pain in your eye or a severe headache
  • Seeing rainbow-coloured halos or rings around lights

Factors That Can Increase Your Risk

Certain factors can make you more likely to develop glaucoma, like:

Understanding these factors helps you and your optometrist get a fuller picture of your eye health.

Your Local Eye Care on Vancouver Island

Because the early signs are often invisible to you, a routine eye health check is an important tool. An exam can measure your eye pressure and assess the health of your optic nerve. This allows your optometrist to detect changes long before they start to affect your sight, which is helpful for managing the condition.

Monitoring your eye health is a direct way to care for your long-term vision. Our team at Cowichan Eyecare uses modern technology to get a clear view of what’s happening inside your eyes. Book an appointment today for a comprehensive eye exam.
